But What If?

When we talk about the homeless in Independence, we recognize there are several different categories: transient homeless, situational and therefore temporary homeless, and in addition, an entrenched population with multi-faceted issues. Their problems are not just economic, not just physical, not just psychological. A multi-faceted program is therefore required to begin remediation of the situation.

The city of Independence, in a comprehensive 2022 Housing Study included these words:

“Homelessness

Each year a point-in-time count of homeless people in Jackson County occurs. In 2020, there were 1,730 homeless people and 1,140 homeless households. Nearly 24 percent of all homeless people were unsheltered. Additionally, 26 percent of the unsheltered homeless population was younger than 18 years of age. Nolt having a permanent home disrupts the rest of a person’s daily life. It is harder to find jobs and private landlords may not rent to prospective tenants who lack a rental history. Homeless has additional impacts on learning and educational attainment of children.”

To initiate lasting change, Extended Hands – Collaborate! wants to initiate a pilot program transcending single issues of homelessness. Our proposal includes:

·        Constructing a tiny home community on donated land outside the Independence square area.

·        Developing a multi-faceted one-year program of total rehabilitation for the homeless, at the end of which, candidates will have saved enough money to pay for first and last month’s rent, a car and emergency funds as they transition into mainstream society.

What if we could create lasting change? What if those who hit rock bottom could transition successfully from no home, no transportation and no job to a life of productivity? Everyone benefits.
