The Fifth W
Journalism is famous for the who, what, when and where of reporting the news. The fifth W is just as important: WHY. The basic principle behind every story is the compelling reason for its existence. That is true for Extended Hands as well.
We connect and encourage and empower the frontline workers offering relief in our community. They work tirelessly for the less fortunate…but who works for them? Who encourages them? Who supports their efforts?
Our mission is one of support with a framework for accomplishing bigger-than-life goals. Along with seeking subsidies for our frontline workers, we dream of establishing a pilot tiny home project in our area. I know. When I write these words my eyes still widen in shock. But yes, that’s the goal. We’ve taken some preliminary steps:
· We’ve sent off our Missouri incorporation papers.
· We have our EIN number.
· We are working on our 501c3.
· We are setting up an account for donations.
· We are in the process of putting together a board of advisors.
Behind the scenes growth is always exciting to write about…but just as important is the balance we maintain in support of our frontline workers.
Anne Farmer is the original go-to lady for Baby Grace, and from her ministry serving young mothers in Buckner has grown numerous chapters replicating her example. Baby Grace is open on Saturdays, offering clothing, diapers and encouragement where it is most needed, and has been for sixteen years. Extended Hands recently coordinated a drive for much needed supplies for Baby Grace in Buckner, and Anne enjoyed the comradery shared by other community leaders of visiting ministries.
Another community leader who shares the Extended Hands vision is Dan Keleher, head of Lunch Partners and Extended Hands treasurer. His team serves hot lunches and groceries with a clothing ministry to more than 300 people a week. Fifty-two weeks a year for 33 years, Lunch Partners has been serving meals to the hungry…but Dan finds encouragement from Extended Hands.
Eastern Jackson County is strong because of its commerce and support services. It is also stronger because of the many who work behind the scenes for no money at all. They cook, clean, serve meals, sort clothes, encourage and watch out for the homeless and disadvantaged within our midst. The fundamental principle behind Extended Hands is encouragement—we exist to uplift, help, energize and equip the people who work for those most fragile among us. We want to thank the many who labor behind the scenes, everyday people with an extraordinary mission. You are our WHY. Thank you for all you do.
